Hannah’s Suckers

Posted at Monday, April 23rd, 2007

Hannah and her Dum DumsMy daughter Hannah cried after the pinata broke at the 2006 Jeub Birthday Bash. The TLC cameras captured the crying. Hannah said she got only Tootsie Rolls. I tried to comfort her the best I could, but there were no suckers left.

Last weekend I attended our region’s national qualifying NCFCA debate tournament. A family from Colorado Springs who watched the program saw the part where Hannah cried for suckers. “I can’t believe Mr. Jeub wouldn’t give her any suckers!” they protested. So, they got their babysitting money out and bought Hannah an entire bag of Dum Dum suckers to share with her brothers and sisters.

So sweet! Hannah is enjoying her treats. She gives you her thanks!

Easter at the Jeubs

Posted at Sunday, April 8th, 2007

Our day began at 6:30 a.m. with the search for eggs in our living room. Wendy and I hid 48 eggs. We intentionally put some in the middle of the room for the little kids to find, and some in difficult areas that took the kids quite some time to find. The four empty cartons (totally 48 eggs) were on the counter. The kids also found their Easter baskets filled with candy. Capitalism immediately commenced as the kids started trading jelly beans for other bits of treasured candy.

Noah’s Easter BasketWe got a surprising phone call from the local Village Inn. Wendy had dropped off six colored pictures the day before for a contest. Noah won a huge Easter basket! I drove to Village Inn and picked it up with the proud winner. Click on this picture to get a full view of this huge prize!

We hosted five other families at our home for our Easter. A friend of ours brought Resurrection Eggs and had the kids 5 and under search for the dozen eggs in the other room. The activity runs through the Easter story in a powerful way. Google Video is down presently, but I will try to launch a 10-minute video that shows the families (6 families, 26 kids). Watch this 10-minute video and you’ll get the idea.

Josiah F. with an eggWe then had two egg hunts. A few of the older kids hid over 100 plastic eggs in our basement. We WERE going to have an outdoor egg hunt, but we received 20 degree weather and a few inches of snow! The Jeubs spent much of the day yesterday cleaning the basement for the hunt. First, we had the 7-and-under kids find approximately 80 plastic eggs filled with candy. We then hid over 100 eggs for the over-7 kids. What a blast!

We then shared in rich fellowship for another hour before all the families left for other engagements. We made a huge ham that we enjoyed later in the afternoon. Ham, au grauten potatoes, sweet-n-sour green beans, sweet potatoes and muffins…mmmmm! What a day.

Earlier in our church service, I shared with the entire group the tradition of the Passover. Most Christians don’t celebrate this Jewish tradition. Even so, the story of the Passover mirrors that of the great sacrifice of Jesus Christ which we celebrate today. The Israelites, before being freed of Egyptian slavery, were instructed to kill a lamb and let the lamb’s blood serve as the sacrifice for the passing of the angel of death. Jesus was the same sacrificial lamb who died for our sins so that we could be free.

Happy Easter everyone!

I received word from TLC today that our first Kids by the Dozen episode will re-air on Mother’s Day (May 13) at 10 a.m. EST. They may, too, air the show before then if a slot opens up. I’ll post more information when it comes available.

What are the recipes for your Turkey Sandwiches and Beans?

Posted at Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

The TLC episode showed us making BBQ turkey sandwiches for 200 guests, plus a pot of beans (which are always the favorite of the meal). We have received many requests for these recipes. Here they are!

3-Bean casserole

Ingredients:

  • 1 can kidney beans
  • 1 can pork n beans
  • 1 can Lima or butter beans
  • 1 lb. hamburger browned (with onions)
  • 1/2 to 1 lb. bacon (brown separately and cool, breakup)
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. ketchup

Mix everything and add 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup ketchup (save some of the bacon grease–and add to this mixture). Cook in crock pot about 1-1/2 hours–or can cook in oven at 350 degrees for about 55 min. Double for a church potluck, or x10 for the Jeub Birthday Bash!

Turkey Sandwiches

Note: You may have to cut this recipe down a bit. This feeds 190 people.

Cook four 20-lb turkeys individually. We prefer electric roasters. Skin and debone the turkeys. Take all left-over meat and gather a #10 can of tomato sauce, 1 bottle of French dressing, 1 bottle of molasses, 1 bag of brown sugar, 1 large jug of ketchup, mustard, and I think that’s it.

Take a very large roasting pan. In the bottom, layer a fair amount of tomato sauce, about 4 cap fulls of French dressing, a really thin drizzle of molassas, sprinkle a handful of brown sugar, 6 cap fulls of ketchup and 3 cap fulls of mustard. Layer an inch of turkey. Repeat till the whole pan (or two) is full.

Bake for an hour, stir it all up, bake for another 20 minutes, and ready to serve on buns. Keep tasting it as you stir, add more ingredients until it tastes awesome.

Wendy is doing much better…

Posted at Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Thank you for your prayers. It really has been quite a fall and winter for us with sickness! LOL. I got home Saturday afternoon. The doctor thinks it was a stomach virus. I went down hill very fast and became dehydrated. I got 8 bags of fluid and am feeling much better. I will probably lay around and recover still for a few days but I hope to be back to normal soon. Love and Hugs to you,

Wendy =) <><
